Frequently Asked Questions

As a DCF-licensed organization, all on-campus volunteers are required to complete a Level 2 background check as a condition of service. This applies regardless of your level of contact with children and is both a DCF requirement and an organizational policy to ensure the safety of every child in our care.

A Level 2 background check includes a fingerprint-based search of Florida and national criminal records, a review of child abuse and neglect history, and a search of sexual predator and offender registries. Results typically take 3–4 weeks.

We understand that not everyone’s schedule allows for a recurring commitment — and there’s still a meaningful place for you here. Opportunities like Donation Drives and Special Events are flexible, one-time ways to make a difference without a weekly obligation.
Through our Donation Drives, you can help collect and organize essential items — clothing, school supplies, and household goods — that go directly to the children and families we serve. It’s a great fit if you’re looking to contribute on your own time and terms.
Do I have to pass a background check?

Yes. All individual volunteers are required to pass a Level 2 background check — regardless of whether you will be working directly with children. Please note that background check fees are the responsibility of the volunteer and are not covered by our organization.

Why is a background check required?

Kids In Distress and Family Central are licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). DCF licensing requires that all volunteers on campus pass a Level 2 background check — regardless of whether you work directly with children. These standards exist to protect every child in our care. (Florida Statute Section 435.04).
